Ancient Egypt Subscription Box 1: Vayeshev
Parshat Vayeshev tells us about the very beginning of the Israelites’ time in Egypt Due to a famine in the land of Canaan, Yaakov instructs his sons (except Binyamin) to go to Egypt, where grain was reported to be plentiful Joseph, who was sold by his jealous brothers and now lived in Egypt, interpreted Pharaoh's dream about seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. Joseph advised Pharaoh to store up grain during the years of abundance so that they would have enough food during the famine. The collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art contains an Egyptian funerary object that holds original grain from thousands of years ago. We will explore this ancient piece and create our own diorama of scenes from Vayeshev inspired by this fascinating artifact.
