Havdalah in Vienna

Create a besamim box based on a historic treasure from Vienna's Jewish community while exploring the significance of fragrant spices and the concept of Hiddur Mitzvah.

Inspired by a magnificent silver fish-shaped besamim holder from nineteenth-century Vienna, whose unblinking eyes symbolize G-d's constant and eternal watchfulness, children will engage in a multisensory exploration of Havdalah, discovering the beauty, symbolism, spirituality, and tradition of Hiddur Mitzvah, the beautification of Jewish ritual objects and mitzvot through art.

Children will design and create their own functional besamim boxes, complete with fragrant cloves to enhance the sensory experience of Havdalah.
